CLIENT CHALLENGE
The homeowner contacted Harley Reid & Sons, experienced bathroom fitters in Aberdeen, because their family bathroom had become tired and outdated. The existing space featured period panelling that had seen better days, and the room no longer met the practical demands of everyday family use.
What appeared on the surface to be a straightforward refurbishment, however, revealed more significant problems once work began. Behind the panelling and beneath the floor, the team found rotten floorboards and damaged walls – the kind of hidden deterioration common in older Aberdeen properties that, if left untreated, would undermine any new installation.
The client needed a team that could handle the remedial work as well as the renovation itself.
OUR APPROACH
To begin, the Harley Reid & Sons team stripped out the existing bathroom in full, including the removal of the period panelling. This exposed the underlying condition of the floor and walls, and confirmed that structural repairs were needed before any new work could take place. This included:
- Removing all existing fittings, suite, and period panelling
- Repairing rotten floorboards and damaged wall surfaces to create a sound, stable base
- Plastering and preparing walls ready for the new installation
- Laying herringbone flooring throughout
- Fitting tile-effect shower panels in place of traditional tiling
- Installing a modern bathroom suite with new plumbing, fixtures, and fittings
- Installing LED lighting to brighten the finished space
- Improving layout and storage throughout
The decision to use tile-effect shower panels rather than traditional ceramic tiling kept the installation practical and hardwearing for a busy family bathroom, while the herringbone floor adds a considered design touch that lifts the overall finish.
THE RESULT
The completed family bathroom is a clean, modern space that’s built to last. The herringbone floor and LED lighting give the room a fresh, contemporary feel, while the tile-effect shower panels and updated suite make it practical and easy to maintain for everyday family use.
Beneath the surface, the remedial work carried out before installation means the new bathroom sits on solid, properly prepared foundations – not a detail that’s visible, but one that matters significantly for the long-term quality of the finish.
Stripping out a period bathroom, repairing what was hidden underneath, and delivering a fully refurbished room in two weeks is no small undertaking. The result speaks for itself.
