THE DETAILS

Location: Cults, Aberdeen
Service: En-suite Installation & domestic hot water system conversion
Client: Residential Homeowner
Completed by: Harley Reid & Sons

Harley Reid & Sons recently completed an en-suite bathroom installation & domestic hot water system conversion in Cults, transforming an outdated space into a modern, practical en-suite bathroom. In addition, the customers gravity fed domestic hot water system was decommissioned and replaced with pressurised system.

The project involved removing the existing suite bathroom, redesigning the layout to receive a spacious ensuite shower room. In addition, the existing gravity fed domestic hot water system was fully decommissioned (including storage tank in the attic) and altered to place a new unvented hot water cylinder in the customers garage as opposed to the internal airing cupboard – providing additional storage space within the property itself.

The homeowner contacted Harley Reid & Sons, experienced bathroom fitters in Aberdeen, because their existing en-suite had become outdated and no longer suited the way the household used the space. The layout felt cramped, and the room needed a full redesign rather than a simple refresh.

Alongside the bathroom itself, there was a second, more complex challenge. The property’s domestic hot water was supplied by an ageing gravity-fed system – a storage tank in the attic feeding an airing cupboard cylinder. The system was inefficient, and the space it occupied inside the home was being lost to pipework and tanks rather than put to practical use.

The client wanted both problems solved together: a modern, spacious shower room and a hot water system that worked harder and freed up space within the property.

To begin, the Harley Reid & Sons team removed the existing bathroom suite and planned the redesign of the space to accommodate a generously proportioned en-suite shower room.

At the same time, work began on the hot water system. The gravity-fed system was fully decommissioned, including the removal of the storage tank from the attic – a significant undertaking that required careful disconnection and clearance. This included:

  • Fully decommissioning the gravity-fed hot water system and removing the attic storage tank
  • Installing a new unvented hot water cylinder in the garage, freeing up the internal airing cupboard for storage
  • Redesigning the en-suite layout to create a more spacious, practical shower room
  • Installing underfloor heating throughout the en-suite
  • Fitting a modern bathroom suite with new plumbing, fixtures, and fittings
  • Laying contemporary wall and floor tiling throughout

Relocating the cylinder to the garage rather than a like-for-like internal replacement was a deliberate decision – one that gave the homeowner genuinely useful storage back inside the property while placing the system somewhere more accessible for future servicing.

The completed en-suite delivers a modern, well-proportioned shower room that makes far better use of the available space than what was there before. Underfloor heating, contemporary tiling, and updated fixtures throughout give the room a clean, comfortable finish that suits everyday use.

The hot water conversion is equally impactful, if less visible. The ageing gravity-fed system is gone entirely replaced by a pressurised unvented cylinder housed in the garage. The homeowner now benefits from improved water pressure, a more efficient system, and an airing cupboard that can actually be used for storage.

Two weeks of coordinated work across both the bathroom and the wider heating system delivered a result that goes well beyond a standard en-suite renovation.
